Plexus International 1988

On December 17 of 1988, in Cagliari, it was staged Tradition vs Modernity: Open Call, Encounters among Artists, as 4th act of the Serpent travelling event. It was organized by Antonio Caboni and Tommaso Meloni, on the theme of tradition, modernity, and revitalization of the historical centre. It was staged as outdoor happening  in piazza San Sepolcro, in abandon state at the centre of the city. There, it was performed the departure for Dakar of the little art toy boat. On November 14 of 1988, in Carloforte, in Sardinia, on the occasion of the celebrations of The Madonna of the Slave, it was presented the 3rd art of The Serpent travelling event. On board the Elisabeth boat, with the crew wearing Purgatorio Show 88 T-shirts, it was performed with Carlo Dernini, Daniela Sansone and Zi of the Red Baron, the continuation of the travelling Plexus event and its de-materialization in direction to Goree.

On November 11 of 1988, in New York, at the Snow Ben Room of Bobst Library of New York University, it was performed Il Viaggio del Serpente as second act of the Serpent travelling event It was sponsored by the Italian Institute of Culture and presented as an international interactive Italian evening of art, music, poetry and technology. It was made in collaboration with the Department of Art and Art Professions and the Department of Music and Performing Art Professions of New York University, the Department of Physics of the University of Cagliari...

On November 3 of 1988, in New York the Purgatorio Show ’88 opened at C.U.A.N.D.O. It was presented as a community call for the freedom in art. The Purgatorio Show 88 was presented as first act of The Serpent,  planned in five acts in five different places: New York, Carloforte, Cagliari, Dakar and Goree.  It featured Lorenzo Pace, Miguel Algarin, Shock Troop Theatre, Garrick Beck, Jose Rodriguez, Pat Geri Russel, Stephen Di Lauro, Arturo Lindsay, Lynne Kanter, Joanee Freedom, Mitch Ross, Sandro Dernini Leonard Horowitz, Wess Power, Tony Noighera...

On September 23 of 1988, in New York, in the loft of Carmen Miraglia in Soho, Sandro Dernini presented the new labels of his Plexus Campboll Soup Can, conceived as a limited edition of 100 time capsules to recall his 1987 Andy Warhol’s dematerialization performance. The Plexus label was designed by Robert Kern and printed by Maggie Reilly of Ram Studio. It looked like a Campbell Soup Can, with a little fine difference, instead of Campbell’s, it was written with the same character Campboll’s. At the center, there was a circular...

On July 4 of 1988, on the first anniversary of the 1987 Serpent event, in Rome, it was staged at The Mago d’Oz,  a Plexus dematerialisation recall event. The Mago of Oz was the historical place of the L.I.A.C.A., managed by Giovanna Ducrot, where in 1987 ended the Plexus Serpent happening parade through the streets of Trastevere. On June 18 of 1988, in the harbor of Carloforte, in Sardinia, on board the Elisabeth boat, it was staged the third historical Plexus Art Slavery Manifesto Group Shot. Anna Saba, Randi Hansen, Luigi Mazzarelli, Annamaria Caracciolo, Giovanna Caltagirone, Antonello Dessi, Andrea Portas,  Franco Meloni, Armando Soldaini,  Stefano Grassi,  Maria Grazia Medda, Loredana Melis, Pierluigi di Todaro, Tiziana De Giorgi, Zi of the Barone Rosso, Sandro Dernini, Fabrizio Bertuccioli performed on board the Elisabeth boat its transformation into a symbolic art slaves...

In August of 1988, Sandro Dernini arrived in the Medina of Dakar, guest of Assane MBaye, in rue 17 angle 8. There he performed  the re-materialisation landing from Sardinia of the Plexus toy boat with on board the Don Cherry’s Buddha statuette, the Nuraghic statuette and many other Plexus relics. In early May of 1988, in East 6th Street, in the Lower East Side, in front the burned building of The Shuttle, as a call for a community action for the freedom of art, it was launched The Plexus International Art Slavery Photo Shot Manifesto. The Art Slavery Manifesto was conceptualized as a multi-fractal 900 artists faces photo to be collected in New York, Rome, Sardinia and Dakar, and then to be sold through a public art auction to be held at the Pan African Festival of Arts and Cultures in December, in Dakar...

In New York, on February 20 of 1988, on the occasion of the first anniversary of his 1987 Andy Warhol’s dematerialization performance, Sandro Dernini organized the happening An Art Redefinition of a Campbell Soup Can. It was inspired by the symposium The Redefinition of Art in the Collision of Cultures in the Post-Modern World, held at New York University in that time by the I.C.A.S.A. (International Center for Advanced Studies in Art).
